Pet cremation costs have spiraled. Aquamation is gentler. Green burial is possible. Here is everything you need to know—without the upsells.

Pet Cremation

$100 – $400

The most common option. Your pet’s body is placed in a cremation chamber and reduced to ash. The process takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on size.

Private cremation: Your pet is cremated alone. You receive only their ashes. $200–$400.

Communal cremation: Multiple pets cremated together. Ashes are not returned. $50–$150.

Partitioned cremation: Pets separated by bricks in the same chamber. Ashes may commingle slightly. $100–$250.

Pet Aquamation

$150 – $500

Water-based cremation for pets. The same process as human aquamation—gentler, more thorough, and returns 20% more ash. The ash is whiter and finer than flame cremation ash.

Pet aquamation is available in most major metro areas and growing rapidly. Many veterinary clinics partner with aquamation providers. The process takes 8–12 hours for a medium-sized dog.

Pet Green Burial

$50 – $300

Home burial (where legal), pet cemeteries, or natural burial preserves. No embalming, biodegradable casket or shroud, directly in the earth.

Home burial: Legal in most rural areas. Check local ordinances. Dig 3–4 feet deep, below the frost line. Wrap in a biodegradable shroud or place in a wooden box. Mark the spot with a stone or plant.

Pet cemeteries: Dedicated grounds with perpetual care. $200–$1,000 for plot and burial. Common in suburban areas.

Natural burial preserves: Some human green burial cemeteries accept pets. Check with the Green Burial Council.
